Abstract

Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), as pioneered by Halliday, views language as a  social semiotic resource utilized to accomplish people’s purposes by expressing meanings  in context. This paper attempts to discuss : 1) Themes in an English text translated into  Indonesian and the writer’s reason to use the dominant theme, 2) The shift of the theme used. The source text in this study is a bilingual story book entitled Smiley Shark which is  translated into Indonesian version of the same book entitled Hiu Murah Senyum. This story  book is one of translated products which have an important role to educate kids about new  things. All languages the clausa has the character of a message. That’s why the clausa is  organized as a message by having a special status assigned to one part of it. The special  status is called theme. Every text has its own characteristic of theme to organize message.
