Abstract

Indonesia is the largest archipelagic country and has the second longest coastline in the world. The benefits of Indonesia's rich marine resources have not yet been fully felt by coastal communities. This is shown by the existence of poverty data that still surrounds coastal communities. This research aims to determine the causes of poverty and overcome poverty through local community participation in the marine tourism industry. This research also aims to provide recommendations to the government, marine tourism actors and local communities to reduce poverty rates in marine tourism areas. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with data collection in the form of interviews, observation and documentation. The results of this research show that the root cause of poverty in fishing communities in marine tourism destinations is the lack of support from local governments and entrepreneurs. Apart from that, fishing communities tend to only rely on one source of livelihood. Poverty reduction can be done by increasing the support of local governments and entrepreneurs as well as providing side job options to increase the income of fishing communities.
